I was able to consider when this story was written and understood it was published prior to the Civil war and inso being gave Poe extremely Liberal Views and probably was pretty groundbreaking for the time. I think both stories do Poe a justice as they are ones you wouldn’t typically associate with him as it they are both a bit fantastical and fanciful. I did go into this with an open mind hoping this could change my opinion but after reading I still think The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall is mildly better. From ehind the huge ulk of one of those sharply-defined masses of cloud already. I would say that this story read quicker and easier compared to Hans Pfaall. They way Poe initially paints Legrand as mentally unwell, coupled with the mystery and bit sized bits of information he feeds us, made this quite compelling. ![]() I have to say I did enjoy it, especially once I realized Jupiter spoke with a Jamaican accent.
